about

This is the title song from a Hmong/American film story. Even though the film is still unpublished it is a great song and well received by the Hmong community.
My vision for the musical is orchestral in nature with a strong theme of American Nationalism bonded with the cultural sounds of Southeast Asia. Much like the bond that develops between the Americans and the Hmong in the film, the different textures need to support each other and not compete for attention.
Since “Over the Fence” is both a war story and a story of family, love, and friendship, I had a rich pallet of emotions to draw inspiration from.
I like to use whatever sound is right for the emotion while keeping a consistent palette throughout the film. The prominent instruments the Hmong culture in Laos are the flute, a reed instrument called the “qeeg” (roughly pronounced kang) and bowed and plucked strings. One of the many challenges is incorporating traditional Hmong themes and sounds with orchestra music from the Western world, as well as blending the cosmopolitan sounds of gongs, bells and drums from the rhythmic aspects of older Thai and Vietnamese music. I was very lucky to have a great traditional Hmong singer to write lyrics to my tune. Thanks Ka!

Laura Olson Spokane, Washington

My music style is part classical and part synthesized, blending instruments in untraditional combinations. I prefer to use large orchestra, choirs, and sometimes include synthesized ambient sounds, such as ethereal electronics paired with the raw pure sounds of a wordless choir. What I can’t play and record by myself or other professionals is produced with the highest quality MIDI sampling. ... more
